Thanks to my purchase of Anaheim Ducks tickets back in November of ‘08 (they were hosting the Stars while I was working in Irvine for a few weeks) I am being pelted with offers to purchase Stanley Cup playoff tickets.

Thanks, Versus, For Making Me a Pirate

I planned to conclude my MLK day celebration by sitting down and watching my beloved Dallas Stars face the heinous Los Angeles Kings on my giant DLP TV – I’m literally a thousandaire, folks.  But Versus (it’s a deep deep cable channel specializing in obscure sports, which is why the NHL is on it) decided they needed to colorcast this mighty battle between Pacific division foes thus forbidding my good friends Ralph and Razor from do so.

Well I don’t have Versus.  I recently downsized my cable lineup and it just wasn’t worth the top tier for Versus. 

So I have to ask how a league that can barely draw flies in most markets can allow their “broadcasting partner” to block the viewing of their product to virtually everyone in our great nation’s fifth largest market? 

Sure, I guess I could blame Dish Network for assigning Versus to the higher tier.  But I’m an American and I don’t want my opinion complicated with facts.

Heartbroken that there would be no Stars for me tonight, I used the google and found a site that was “sharing” the game with friends.

Oh happy day.

Yeah, it was grainy picture and there was only a rumor of a puck in play.  But I thwarted The Man.  So, props to me.

One interesting note, the feed was from Canada’s TSN network and I got to see a political advertisement for who ever is there Prime Minister.  He claimed that Canada has lower unemployment rate than the US.  Unless the corporate media has lied to me, that just means that we’re more productive.  So suck on that Canada.

By the way, The Stars won 2-1 on Jamie Langenbruner’s power play goal in the 2nd.

Enjoying the Good Life

One of the nice perks of the new job is getting put in the lottery for the owners Stars/Mavs tickets whenever they don't want to go. I won on only my second try. Yay me!

After stuffing my face with free Platinum Level buffet, I finally made it to my seat with the Stars up 4-0 with a few minutes left in the first period.

Ugh

The Dallas Stars are off to a terrible start. And things got worse yesterday when it was announced that Captain Brendon Marrow was out the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Without the heart and soul of the team, it's hard to imagine them lifting themselves from the basement of the Western Conference.

So, I'm consoling myself with memories of better times.

Working In SoCal: Day 6 -- Stars/Ducks

For the first time in my Dallas Stars fandom, I watched a hockey match played on enemy ice.

As luck would have it, the Stars are making a west coast swing and they started it Friday night at The Anaheim Duck's Honda Center. And, so as not to bury the lede, the Stars won 5-2 with new Right Winger Mark Parish making his debut with a hat trick.

So what was it like watching a game in a foreign port? In a word, lonely. There was no one to high-5 after each of the many Dallas' scores. I did see a handful of Stars sweaters, tho.

The Honda Center itself had not much to distinguish itself. I did manage to spend $9 for a 16oz cup of beer. Usually at those prices a pair of naked breasts would be shaken in front of me. But that's what I get for ordering an "import" like Blue Moon. On top of that, the hot dog I got tasted more like vienna sausage than hot dog. On both counts, the AAC wins.

Where the AAC loses, however, is number of douchenozzles wearing ski hats and flat billed hats. And this requires two separate rants.

No one of any intelligence has ever worn a flat billed hat. That's a fact and try to disprove it. And I think it is to Dallas' credit that I don't see them nearly as much there as I do on both coasts. And I know I sound like Grampa Wally when I ask why anyone would want to look like an idiot wearing them. Stop looking stupid.

But what confused me even more was the ski caps. It was 90 today in So Cal. So why the ski caps??? Are we so dedicated to our look that we must wear them no matter the temperature? I know the hot guy in the Abercrombie and Fitch catalog looked sooooooper cooooooool wearing them. But he was outside a chalet, not walking to a hockey game in a desert.

But this just goes to prove how stupid the crowd was. Late in the game, with the Stars up 4-1, the Ducks score a power play goal. To which the crowd begins chanting "Tuuuuuuuurckooooooooo".

Hey!!! Assclowns!!! Your goalie was pulled after 24 minutes. Maybe taunting the oppostion goalie isn't the smartest move.

Heartache

It's the first team to 16 wins, for a team to skate the Stanley Cup.

But those fucking Red Wings stopped my beloved Stars at 10.

There's nothing in sports better than the Stanley Cup playoffs, especially when your team goes on an extended run. And this was a much fun as I've had since 2000. I need more Stars hockey and October seems so far away right now.

I meant to post this before Round 2 started. But it still works.

My Bar Isn't That High, I Guess

Last Friday was one of the greatest days of my life. Certainly not better than this day, but still very good. You see, after months of promises, Dish Network finally delivered the goods and gave me and the rest of us like-minded nerds SciFi Channel and my precious Battlestar Galactica in HD.

On top of that glory, Channel 27 finally decided that they should be showing the Stars in HD. Alas Dish does not deliver 27 in HD. But I attached an antenna to my receiver and viola, I had 27 and The Stars in glorious HD.
